Today I’m going to talk about something that’s been on my mind. And because I have a podcast, I get to talk about stuff that’s been on my mind. I spend a lot of time thinking about why people exercise. Why they decide to do it. Why they keep doing it. And why they stop doing it.

Today, I’m going to talk about one big reason why this is likely happening. I’m going to talk about the fixation on your body.
We discuss:
How women going through menopause are often at war with the changes going on in their bodies.
Why what you do with your body is connected with who you are as a whole person.
The fixation people have with changing parts of their body that they don’t like.
Setting fitness goals that have nothing to do with how your body looks.
Why the look of your body rarely has to do with your actual strength.
… and more!

Here are some highlights.
Losing sight of fitness benefiting you as a whole person
“But when you fixate on the body alone, you lose sight of all of the other ways fitness can benefit you as a whole person. You can’t see the forest for the trees. And in this case, the trees are your belly, your butt, and your arms. And when you don’t see the changes you want to see, you get upset, frustrated, angry, possibly depressed. And you give up.”
How performance goals can help
“What’s cool about these types of performance goals is that they are all do-able, even if you have belly fat. One of my favorite sayings is that six pack abs won’t make you run faster. They won’t - but strong legs and improved aerobic capacity will.
The more time you spend working toward performance goals, the less you will likely care about aesthetic goals. You’ll be too busy being stoked about these new cool things that you can do to care about that other stuff.”
Stop being at war with your body
“First thing is to work on not being at war with your body. I know that can be a hard thing to do. Especially when you’ve spent years or decades hating your body or parts of your body. A flat stomach does not define you as a human. Neither do toned arms or a nice butt.
When you are on your deathbed, nobody will talk about how they admired you for your six pack abs. They won’t talk about your abs at all. They’ll talk about how you lived your life. So I ask you this - how much joy and happiness are you denying yourself by fixating on parts of your body that you don’t like?”
