In this episode I take a step back from my regular interviews and look at our collective mental and emotional state going into a new year. I break down simple, actionable ways on how to take stock of where we all are during the pandemic and the best ways to keep yourself in a healthy emotional and mental state. Without that, you cannot set big goals for yourself or stretch yourself to reach for greatness.
I discuss:
- How women are feeling right now as they are unable to be the athlete they want to be
- A few tips on how to give yourself grace and how to get back to ‘you’
- Why it’s okay to be where you’re at, you are not alone and you are not a failure
- How exercise is not a punishment for what you eat but a celebration of what you can do
- That nothing is going to magically change on January 1st
- How the best thing you can do is get yourself moving
… and more!

Here are some highlights:
The Reality of The New Year
“We are in month 10 of the pandemic and we are also in December, getting close to the end of the year,” Robin says. “When we have a new year, under normal circumstances, there is usually a lot of optimism, a lot of hope, and a lot of thoughts about a fresh start. And we all want that more than we have ever wanted that before, but we are also seeing the reality of the situation which is that we are in a pandemic and we are still going to be in a pandemic in January and we don’t know when that’s ending.”
A Common Thread I am Seeing from Women Online Right Now
“These are women who tend to live fairly athletics lives and are driven to be bit and by athletic competitions and races and events,” says Robin. “And none of these types of events have happened in a while. And what I’m seeing is people talking about how they are feeling lost. They’re feeling unmotivated and a little bit helpless. And they’re definitely feeling lonely being stuck at home for so long and not being connected to communities and friends.”
Let’s Talk About 2020
“I’m going to talk about a few different topics and give you some actionable tips to give yourself some grace,” Robin said. “This will be a bit of a departure from our normal ‘ra ra, let’s explore our athletic potential’ etc. I’m all about that life and I’m still all about that life. But sometimes you have to take a step back and see how you are doing. Are you taking care of yourself? Because that’s important for you to ask before you can take on massive, bold goals. This year has been nothing short of traumatic. This year has been an upheaval of your life and of your goals.”
I Don’t Want You To Beat Yourself Up
“When you’re used to a life where you’re active and you’re disciplined with your fitness and it’s not happening because you’re in this cycle of trauma, and your life is turned upside down and the things that drove you disappeared, you might feel the need to beat yourself up,” says Robin. “And you might feel like you’re a failure. I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to beat yourself up. You have every reason to have taken a step back. You have every reason to be in the place that you’re at.”
Why The Phrase “Quarantine 15” is Problematic
“We’re heading into the holidays and holidays have a big eating component,” Robin said. “And you’ll be told about limiting your portions or earning your meal. You’re gonna hear about New Year’s cleanses and detoxes and clean eating challenges. You’re going to see ads and influencers talking about products to help you lose weight fast. I just want to remind you that your body seize does not define you. Exercise is not a punishment for what you eat but a celebration of what you can do.”
Why You Need to Put yourself First
“I have a membership program that is primarily a fitness membership but I really want to help people who are in my membership discover and learn how to take care of themselves from the inside out,” says Robin. “The whole person, mentally, physically, emotionally, because that all plays a role in how you live. And that plays a role in fitness. Fitness is just one part of the puzzle. If you’re missing something mentally or emotionally, it’s going to present itself in your physical behaviors. Your drive, your motivation, your energy.”
Why Moving Daily is Essential
“We sit a lot,” Robin said. “We sit a lot working from home. Get up and move at least once an hour. Get up and move for at least 5 minutes once an hour at the very least. Move your feet, move your legs, do some stretches. And if you have time to do a short workout everyday, that’s going to make you feel even better. Your body craves movement. Your body is meant to move and it’s not meant to sit all day.”
