Amy’s early running days
“I was never exceptional,” said Amy. “I was just, totally in my heart, a runner. It was always the sport that I chose in Middle School and High School and whenever I got the chance. But I was never an elite level runner or anything like that. So that’s the beginning of my story.”
Amy finds her way back to running
“I had just finished college and was a young adult and getting my first job,” Amy says,” I was drinking my weight in beer and my pants started getting a little tight. So I signed up for a marathon training group at a running store. That was the next stage in my running journey which I think parallels a lot of adults because it was driven by friendship and weight loss.”
Amy considering jumping into triathlons
“I got into triathlons here in Florida where summers are really hot,” said Amy. “We would go running on Saturdays and then go to breakfast and frequently we would say to ourselves that because of the heat we should start doing triathlons because you then get to swim. None of us had ever done them but we were interested in the swimming part because getting in water would be much cooler.”
The mental challenge is as special as the physical challenge
“Along the way I found that I really do enjoy doing doing all of it” Amy said. “They are very different, I love the marathon and I love the long triathlons. They are very doable physical challenges and they are also very mentally challenging. I feel like you’ve done something very special when you get them done.”
Amy learns her limits in Louisville
“Iron Man Louisville is not one of my seven Iron Man finishes,” says Amy. “I started the race bit I did not finish. That was really hard and what’s interesting about it is the situation was that it was 43 degrees which is not in my wheel house since I live in Miami, Florida. I had a plan for dealing with cold weather, it was not a good plan since I didn’t know how to deal with cold and rainy weather. I got into a situation and I made a careful, reasoned decision that even now I will tell you was the right decision. I said “this is not a good idea for me to be out here” and so I pulled myself off the course. It was the right decision but I felt terrible for months because I did not have the skill set to deal with the mismatch in my identity between ‘I am someone who finishes Iron Man’s’ and someone who pulls themself off the course of an Iron Man.”
Amy discusses her podcast
“I started it in 2016 and I did my first Iron Man in 2013,” Amy says. “When I began training I knew that for me it was an insane, insane goal. I didn’t know many people who had done it and it was way outside my comfort zone. As I was building my own sphere of people who would support me in this I found other people who had stories of doing things that I found as extreme or crazier. “
