Simple fitness is possible. I know, shocking, right? The truth is, you don’t need to be doing CRAZY gym routines to get into great shape and be ready to take on something like a 5k, 10k or even an obstacle run!

In this episode, I’m talking to one of my amazing clients, Eileen Faulk and about how my 21 day fitness challenge has led to her training for her first big race. Yup. It’s true. She’s doing it!
We discuss:
- Why weight loss as your only fitness goal can be detrimental.
- The fact that diet culture is so rooted in being active that we forget all the reasons it’s amazing.
- How empowering it can be, especially after 40, to have a body that is strong.
- Why lifting weights as a woman is super important.
- How the combination of building strength with developing skills, will start to show you that you are able to do things you never imagined you could.
… and more!

Here are some highlights.
The battle we face against diet culture
“So many women - particularly women over 40 - have decades...a lifetime of conditioning that has led them to believe deeply in their soul that the only reason to exercise is to lose weight. That if someone brings up the topic of exercise with you, what they are really saying is they think you need to lose weight.”
A body in motion stays in motion
“For the most part, we sit. All day. And I don’t know about you, but I sit in all sorts of weird, funky positions. I’m not mindful of my posture when I’m sitting. And think about when you stand. Do you lean? Do you favor one side? Do you carry groceries or bags on one shoulder?
Do you even think about that stuff?
Well, if you don’t move regularly, imbalances and stiffness builds up. Freedom of movement suffers. And this is how people develop mobility issues as they age. Conversely, if you exercise regularly, you have a better chance of maintaining mobility as you age. And who doesn’t want to be able to move well into your 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond.”
Being active is empowering
“Daily movement combined with regular strength training have a host of benefits that have nothing to do with weight loss, including increased mobility, better health, reduced risk of injury and/or cardiovascular disease, and it just feels good.
In fact, I’ll go one better. When you move daily and you get strong, it’s empowering as hell!
I imagine there are many women over 40 who would never believe that they could deadlift equal to or greater than their body weight. I imagine there are many women over 40 who don’t think they could ever do a pull-up. I bet there are lots of women over 40 who can’t see themselves running a 5K. But when you exercise regularly and with intention, and you lift weights, and you work on these skills, you would be surprised at what you will start being able to do.”
